The world-renowned Oberammergau Passion Play began at Pentecost in 1634, in the midst of the Thrity Years' War, when residents from the town were seeking reprieve from the Bubonic Plauge. The inhabitants of the village vowed that if God were to spare them from the Plague, they would perfrom a play every ten years depicting "the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ." Not a single person fell victim to the Plague after the villagers' promise. That first performance sparked a heartfelt tradition that lives on today..... In 2000, this astounding and passionate play took the stage again in Oberammergau for the 40th time! The Passion Play performances will begin again in 2010, when thousands of Oberammergau's residents will once again display this powerful story. Every 10 years, people from all over the world flock to this charming village to be a part of this unforgettable experience. The performance blends dramatic text, beautiful music and choral accompaniment as scences from both the Old and New Testament unfold before the audience's eyes.
